Montevina's
large, spreading building is surrounded by wide
vineyards. This winery is well known for its
pioneer experiments in developing Italian grape
varieties in Amador County. Montevina maintains an
extensive research plot. Currently produced
varietals include Barbera, Sangiovese, and Refosco.
Winemaker Jeff Myers also produces Zinfandel, White
Zinfandel, Brioso (a light zin), and Fume
Blanc.
Montevina
is now owned by the much larger Sutter Home winery
of Napa, and is one of the few foothills wineries
not owned and operated by a resident family. Now
under construction is a large winery extension,
slated to place Montevina as a high volume wine
producer. The
winery has covered picnic patios that accommodate
300 people, and is a favorite picnic spot.
