In
1977, Leon Sobon -- a research scientist from Los
Altos -- and his wine Shirley came to Amador County
and moved to the former Steiner Ranch to become
vintners. They planted vineyards, converted the old
garage into a winery, and produced 1200 cases their
first year of production. Today, Shenandoah
produces two Zinfandels, a Black Muscat, Barbera,
Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cab/Syrah blend and Sauvignon
Blanc. They also produce Sangiovese and a
Sangiovese/Zinfandel blend.
The Sobons also
own Sobon
Estate, a
few miles to the east. Leon
and son Paul are the winemakers, while Robert --
another son -- also works in the business.
Son-in-law Tom Quinn is in the sales and marketing
area.
Annual production
of the two wineries, including Sobon Estate, is
around 30,000 cases.
Winery Location: 12300 Steiner Road, near
Plymouth
