Oakstone and other wineries located in the Fairplay/Somerset area of El Dorado County have much the same climate, elevation (about 1,500 feet), and soil as the neighboring Shenandoah Valley in Amador County. However, Oakstone sometimes obtains grapes from vineyards in other areas, including the Sauber Vineyard which is located at 3,000 feet. The Syrah wine produced from the Sauber grapes is a fine example of a smooth, deep, rich wine -- maturing in French oak barrels for 20 months.

The winery also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Dessert wines includes Late Harvest Zinfandel, and Syrah Port.

Oakstone's mdern tasting room is found at 6460 Slug Gulch Road, Somerset. It is open Wednesday - Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and owner John Smith is often there to talk to tasters.
